The Earnest Edition

Bible

As we continue a survey of the Old Testament, we will look at the names of the books on the Bible.  This week we will review the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus.  Verse Quiz over the Pentateuch and Historical books will be Wednesday, September 1.


Math

3rd - This week we will review subtraction facts to 18, subtraction by counting back or up, subtraction by making a ten, related subtraction sentences, and fact families.

4th - This week we will be looking at ordinal numbers, solving story problems, zero and other math tools, comparing and ordering numbers.

 

5th – This week we will study decimal place value, comparing and ordering decimals, rounding decimals, and problem solving with decimals.

 

6th – This week we will look at properties of addition, adding and subtracting whole numbers, problem solving, inverse operations, and comparing and ordering decimals.


English

We will begin the year with a unit on writing instructions.  This week students will write the first draft of their instructions, work on good beginnings and endings, revise and proofread their instructions, and publish their instructions.


Spelling

This week we will be studying the words from Lesson 2.  Each day the students will complete a workbook page.  On Monday the class will take a pretest.  Students will write the words they have missed five times.

On Tuesday the students’ assignment will be to use each of the spelling words correctly in a sentence.  Students may work on this assignment over the weekend.  On Thursday evening, the student will be assigned to take a home-test.  This test should be signed by a parent and turned in on Friday. A final test will be given each Friday.


Reading

In Reading this week, we will continue reading Sarah, Plain and Tall.  Sarah has come to visit Papa, Caleb, and Anna, but will she stay?

 

History

This week in History we will continue to look at the early explorers of North America.  We will study Balboa, de Leon, Cortes, Cartier, Coronado, and DeSoto and their discoveries for Spain and France.  We will review on Wednesday for a quiz on Thursday.

 

Science

In Science we are studying the characteristics of living things.  We will study the organization of living things and complete an experiment with yeast.  If you have any extra 16 oz water bottles we could have please sent those with your child on Monday.  We will use them for our yeast experiment.  We will begin reviewing on Friday for a test next week.
